Construction
The sign is carefully laminated from Basswood, Redwood, or Mahogany with an exterior glue. After the design is applied to the sign face, the lettering, numerals or added decorations are hand carved and the sign then receives several coats of exterior primer to seal out all moisture. This is followed by many coats of exterior paint to ensure a long sign life.
Gilding the lettering or decorations with 23K gold leaf is a very popular treatment that has a beautiful buttery reflective sheen that can not be duplicated with paint. It is even more durable than paint since it is unaffected by acid rain or UV rays. Gold leaf has been used for hundreds of years, and while it predominates in New England, this technique is rapidly expanding across the United States. Hardware for wall installation, decorative posts or custom iron are also available to enhance the sign.
